Position: Leisure Travel Underwriter

How does this role contribute to our success?

AXIS Specialty A&H partners with Managing General Underwriters (MGUs) and Program Managers that generate significant Accident & Health business in the U.S. and Canada. This individual will act within established guidelines to develop, analyze, review, evaluate and monitor new and renewal accounts, process accounts and handle underwriting activities.

What will you do?
  • Perform all underwriting roles for Leisure Travel business.
  • Underwrite existing A&H Partners:
    • Evaluate cases as received from MGUs and Program Managers.
    • For complex opportunities/programs, review and evaluate submissions to determine risk acceptability and coverage levels; then work with Actuarial team for approval.
    • Work closely with program managers and external MGUs to obtain additional required information in determining new business or renewal positions.
    • Collaborate with Legal, Product, Operations and Business Development to modify existing MGUs/Programs.
    • Develop and maintain producer/program relationships.
    • Set appropriate premium rates, issue proposals for programs/cases, and letters of intent when appropriate.
    • Perform an annual portfolio review to determine renewal positions for the book of business.
  • Reporting:
    • Update and maintain monthly Specialty A&H underwriting reports.
    • Create ad hoc reports when necessary.
  • Policy Issuance:
    • Create and issue all policies that fall outside the template authority delegated to MGUs/MGAs.
    • Achieve targeted loss ratios and combined ratios by maintaining underwriting discipline through selection and renewal processes.
    • Manage day‑to‑day tasks of the assigned risk portfolio.
    • Act as liaison between internal functional departments and external vendors.
    • Handle special projects and assignments at the request of A&H leadership.
    • Ensure digital files are maintained per AXIS Insurance procedures, including proper documentation, structure and authorizations.
  • Additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role may be required.
About You

What you need to have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Mathematics, Finance, Risk Management, Insurance or related field (preferred).
  • At least two (2) years Accident & Health underwriting experience. P&C experience is not required but helpful.
  • At least three (3) years experience working with and overseeing MGAs/MGUs or Program Managers.
  • Knowledge of the Leisure Travel segment.
  • Product knowledge:
    Accidental Death, Accident Medical Expense, Catastrophic Medical, Disability, Participant Accident, Out‑of‑Country Medical Insurance and Leisure Travel Insurance (a plus).
  • Additional product knowledge helpful but not required:
    Corporate Accident (Business Travel Accident, Voluntary Accident), Occupational Accident, Critical Illness, Life, Supplemental Medical, Dental and Vision.
  • Ability to work with large data sets to evaluate past performance and use data to determine acceptable rating metrics.

Role Factors
  • Travel required (10%).

What we offer

Base salary range: $110,000–$150,000. The offer will be based on a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location. In addition, you will receive competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
