Otsuka’s internship program, Intern the Otsuka Way (InTOW), offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience and develop critical skills while contributing to meaningful projects. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals, learn about the complexities of the pharmaceutical industry, and gain insights into potential career paths. By combining practical experience with professional development, our program prepares interns for future success.

Our internship program also includes instructor‑led trainings, a leadership engagement series, as well as insightful lunch and learns.

Job Description

The AI Systems Engineer Intern will support Otsuka’s Data Engineering and Analytics teams by evaluating the capabilities of Matillion’s AI Assistant (Maia) and assessing its impact on data pipeline development. This role will focus on benchmarking productivity improvements, documenting practical use cases, and creating demos that illustrate how AI assistance can accelerate and enhance ELT/ETL workflows.

This internship offers hands‑on experience with modern data engineering tools, AI‑assisted development workflows, and cloud data platforms, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in the intersection of AI and data engineering

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct structured benchmarking comparing manual vs. AI‑assisted development within Matillion, including productivity analysis, speed and accuracy comparison, and quality and maintainability assessments.
  • Produce a formal productivity analysis report summarizing findings and recommendations.
  • Develop documented workflows, examples, and demos showcasing real‑world use cases where Maia accelerates data engineering work.
  • Support Data Engineering teams by evaluating where AI can integrate into existing development patterns.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify best practices for leveraging AI‑assisted tools within modern data pipelines.
  • Document processes, findings, and recommendations in a clear and accessible format for technical and non‑technical audiences.
Minimum Requirements
  • Undergraduate or graduate student graduating in the next 12–18 months, pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Analytics, Information Systems, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and familiarity with ETL/ELT concepts.
  • Foundational experience with prompt or context engineering (e.g., writing prompts, modifying AI outputs, or using AI‑assisted tools).
  • Strong analytical and communication skills with an interest in AI‑assisted development.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
  • Can commit to full duration of internship program.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience or familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS, Azure).
  • ETL/ELT tools such as Matillion.
  • Python programming.
  • Analytics workflows.
  • Strong documentation abilities and enthusiasm for structured testing and analysis.
  • Curiosity about AI‑based development tools and emerging industry trends.
