Overview
The James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University invites professors and other professionals with established records of scholarship to apply for Visiting Fellow appointments for the academic year September 1, 2026 to June 1, 2027. One-semester appointments are possible but not preferred. Visiting Fellows spend an academic year in residence at Princeton University or the local vicinity and may have teaching opportunities subject to enrollment and approval of the Office of Dean of the Faculty.
Fellows have access to Firestone Library and other University facilities and activities.
All Visiting Fellows are expected to devote full time to their proposed research. They are encouraged to attend or participate in Program activities, including faculty-student seminars, colloquia, and public lectures.
Qualifications and compensation:
Fellows must have a doctorate or equivalent degree. Positions are open to all regardless of citizenship. Fellows normally receive a stipend of one-half of their academic-year salary plus a living allowance, up to a maximum of $130,000. The Fellows’ home institutions are expected to provide at least half of their academic-year salaries.
- Engage in in-person participation during the 9-month term.
- Conduct proposed research and participate in Program activities as available (seminars, colloquia, public lectures).
- Collaborate with Princeton faculty and students as appropriate.
Applicants are required to submit an online application. A complete application must include:
- Cover letter
- Curriculum vitae
- A scholarly paper written in the past three years
- A statement (no more than 1,500 words) describing the proposed research
- Contact information for two references
Selected candidates may be asked to submit a confidential statement indicating salary for the current academic year or to authorize Princeton to confirm salary.
Deadline for priority consideration: 11:59 p.m. EST on December 5, 2025 for appointments beginning in September 2026. Awards will be announced in March 2026 or earlier.

Expected Salary Range: $50,000–$130,000. The University considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, qualifications, experience, education, skills, market, and other considerations when extending an offer. The posted salary range represents a good faith estimate for a full-time position; salaries for part-time positions are pro-rated accordingly. The University also offers a comprehensive benefits program to eligible employees.
