POSITION TITLE: Director of Transportation
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Business & Support Services & Chief Financial Officer
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
Primary Purpose
Direct and manage the transportation and vehicle maintenance program. Oversee the maintenance of all district-owned vehicles. Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the transportation department.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
Certification through Texas Association for Pupil Transportation or
Certification through Texas Association of School Business Officials
Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles
Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair and maintenance
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Ability to coordinate district functions
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
Experience
Three years supervisory experience in transportation operations preferably in public education; five years bus driver experience

Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Management
Sustain and evaluate the transportation program.Prepare and update bus routes and schedules and develop a plan to meet future transportation needs.Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.Respond to emergency calls after hours.Ensure buses are delivered to drivers when breakdowns occur.Direct repair of all district-owned vehicles and oversee plans for preventive maintenance.Process requests for vehicle repairs, prioritize work orders, and contract services not performed in district.Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.Fiscal Management and Inventory
Compile budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs.Administer the transportation budget and ensure programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.Initiate purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.Approve and submit invoices to the business office for payment.Recommend disposal of obsolete or worn vehicles and equipment and recommend purchase of vehicles.Prepare data necessary to process transportation payroll.Act in an ethical and honest manner in all business transactions of the district.Policy, Reports, and Law
Comply with all policies & procedures; internal controls; and state, local, and federal laws as they pertain to the financial affairs of the district.Promptly report to the immediate supervisor or Superintendent any suspected violations of the code of ethics, such as theft, fraud, or any other dishonest act in the workplace.Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in transportation area.Compile, maintain, and present physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.Student Management
Implement student discipline policies and communicate expected behavior to students.Review student behavior reports and conduct conferences with parents, students, and drivers.Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for students who violate rules and regulationsPersonnel Management
Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate all transportation personnel and make sound recommendations for placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.Assign bus drivers to routes and assign substitutes as needed.Prepare, process, and maintain documents required for safety certification and alcohol/drug testing of staff.Evaluate employee job performance to ensure effectiveness.Safety
Enforce safety standards that conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.Advise administration of inclement weather that may result in road hazards or closing school.Assist in gathering information in investigations of school bus accidents and student safety violations.Assist in organizing and conducting training programs to promote a safe work environment.Ensure that transportation equipment is in excellent operating condition.Perform disaster duty as needed (hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.)Professional Growth and Development
Develop training options and improvement plans to ensure `exemplary operations of the department.Attend and make presentations at board meetings and conferences.Attend professional growth activities to keep informed of innovative techniques in transportation.Maintain familiarity with the district’s initiatives to better serve the needs of students.Communication
Notify bus drivers, schools, and the public of changes in bus routes, schedules, and processes.Maintain a positive and effective rapport with staff, parents and the community.Supervisory Responsibilities
