Retail Store Manager – Pet Smart – Prince George, British Columbia, Canada

Store Leader responsible for safety of people and pets, pet‑parent experience, operational execution, financial outcomes, and all human resource functions within the store. The role provides exemplary leadership, drives company culture, achieves targeted results, and champions exceptional service while upholding Pet Smart’s vision, mission, values, and strategy.
Essential Responsibilities- People Leadership:
- Make employment decisions – recruiting, interviewing, hiring, coaching, and terminating.
- Build an open‑door culture, engage associates, and respond to feedback via the Voice of Associate tool.
- Create and post the store schedule, manage associates’ reviews, recognition, and development.
- Delegate effectively, empower others, and drive ownership of results.
- Communicate priorities, adjust team focus, and address associate complaints and grievances.
- Ensure timely delivery of associate reviews and celebrate engagement accomplishments.
- Overall Store
Experience:- Lead the associate and pet‑parent experience; ensure safety and health of pets in store.
- Address pet‑parent concerns via phone, in‑person, or online; promote a positive in‑store environment.
- Evaluate operations, identify continuous improvement opportunities, and partner with local adoption groups.
- Maintain store standards, enforce policies, conduct monthly Core and Services Walks, and prioritize safety.
- Oversee inventory levels and store opening/closing procedures to uphold brand promise.
- Review security cameras, assess safety practices, and act on incidents involving sick or injured pets.
- Business Management:
- Execute corporate strategy and profit‑area goals.
- Analyze root causes of performance issues, communicate results, and develop improvement plans.
- Manage P&L expectations – sales, shrink targets, labor and supplies budgets.
- Submit work orders, process payroll, and complete required reporting and paperwork.
- Provide logistical support as needed for store operations.
- 4–6 years of retail leadership or customer‑focused experience.
- Full‑time availability with flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and maintain composure under pressure.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Oversight of the Experience Leader and Process Leader, up to six lead associates and ten to seventy non‑lead associates, per Pet Smart policies.
- Stand, walk, climb ladders, use hands for handling, writing, and maintaining posture; lift up to 50 lbs solo, 100 lbs with assistance.
- Frequent exposure to mechanical parts, wet environments, and live animals; moderate to high noise levels.
