Do you have a passion for nursing? Do you want to extend your nursing knowledge? We have a training opportunity that may interest you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department n Hospital.

Within a model of person‑centered care and guided by the vision and values of Northern Health, the Staff Nurse is responsible and accountable to provide professional nursing services in a manner consistent with Northern Health standards, the College of BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), the National Emergency Nursing Affiliation (NENA) Standards and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics for Nursing.

Reporting to the Emergency Manager and as a member of a health care team, the Staff Nurse applies Emergency Nursing knowledge and skills to care for various complex health care issues, from non‑urgent to life threatening, for clients who present to the Emergency Department.

Northern Health Regional Emergency Training Program Details

The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence informed online curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level.

There are 2 training positions available for 2025/2026.

  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
  • Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
  • Learners should expect to make a 4-6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program
  • Must have completed Heart and Stroke BLS in the last 6 months
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary
  • Prior experience on an acute care ward (i.e. medical/surgical) preferred
  • Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation
  • Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided

Shift Rotation/Hours of work

Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00.

St. Johns Hospital

St. Johns Hospital is a 24 acute-care bed facility. The Hospital serves the communities of Vanderhoof and the Saik'uz First Nation, as well as acting as a referral centre for the surrounding communities of Burns Lake, Fort St. James and Fraser Lake.

  • 24/7 Emergency department
  • 2 outpatient bays
  • Dietician

  • Diagnostic Imaging, including Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy
