Job Summary Reporting to the Vice President Indigenization ( VPI ) or their designate, and where applicable, assigned day-to day supervision from local management, the Indigenous Advisor and Community Liaison contributes to the maintenance and development of productive and positive working relationships with First Nations and Métis communities within the community campus catchment. The incumbent will work with First Nations leadership and community members, as well as supervisors in agencies, industry, and businesses, to design and create appropriate guidelines for college programs and services.

This position will contribute to provincial mandates in activating the Indigenous Partnerships and Pathways Program (formerly the Aboriginal Service Plan – ASP ) supporting learners in post-secondary environments with ongoing engagement and consultation with community.

Specific Duties
  • Assist CNC in designing dynamic strategies and policies that create positive educational and service links between the college and Indigenous communities.
  • Liaise between First Nations and Métis communities and the college.
  • Advise faculty and College staff about First Nations protocols and other cultural considerations.
  • Provide direct cultural input into program development and ongoing delivery based on community guidance.
  • Facilitate meetings with Indigenous leadership, administrators, community members, and other stakeholders on Indigenous initiatives.
  • Encourage involvement of Indigenous leadership, Elders, Knowledge Holders, and administration in college activities and events.
  • Provide educational outreach service to Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Support the promotion of CNC programs and services to First Nations and Métis communities.
  • Solicit feedback from Indigenous learners to determine supports and ensure campus activities and programming are culturally inclusive and safe.
  • Provide guidance and direction for strategies that prioritize Indigenous learner success.
  • Participate at local, provincial and federal events relating to Indigenous education or training discussions.
  • Coordinate events grounded in promoting Indigenous student wellness and success at CNC.
  • Liaise with Indigenous organizations to integrate relevant community offerings and needs.
  • Co-design proposals with Indigenous communities and organizations for college programs and services.
  • Gather ideas from Indigenous leadership and organizations to ensure CNC is responsive to educational needs.
  • In collaboration with the VPI and local management, provides support and guidance to Indigenous Partnerships and Pathways activities (formally Aboriginal Services Plan).
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities.
  • Promote a positive work atmosphere and communicate in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students, colleagues, and community.
  • Other related duties as assigned by direct supervisor or designate.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Recognized two (2) year diploma in Indigenous studies, social work, education, or related field of study. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • 3 years or more Previous experience working collaboratively with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and organizations; or an equivalent combination education and experience may be considered.
