Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing (DON), the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) assists in the twenty‑four‑hour management of the Acute Care Nursing Department. The ADON assumes the Director of Nursing role if the Director of Nursing is unavailable. The ADON assists in supervising assigned personnel to ensure that nursing care services are provided in accordance with regulations, policies, procedures, and good practice, effectively meeting patients' needs.

The ADON assists in directing and coordinating the activities of the professional and supporting nursing personnel. Collaborate with physicians as needed to ensure high‑quality patient care and effective communication. This position is deemed safety‑sensitive and will adhere to all policies associated with this designation. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.

  • Assist the DON in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing day‑to‑day functions of the hospital nursing department per current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the hospital
  • Assist the DON in making any necessary adjustments to the Hospital Nursing operation that shall ensure the continued ability of the Hospital Nursing department to provide quality services on behalf of the patients and their families
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, participating in team problem‑solving methods, and acting as a special liaison to medical staff
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related goals as needed
  • Responsible for administering all FCMC personnel policies and procedures fairly and equitably
  • Promotes public relations by representing the hospital at social and community affairs; participates in public speaking and presentations
  • Actively promotes and participates in Electronic Health Record implementation and training
  • Assist with ensuring medical and administrative equipment operation by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques
  • Assist with maintaining nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports, identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies, approving requisitions and cost allocations, as well as maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Meet with Hospital Nursing staff under his/her supervision to communicate FCMC information
  • Identify and correct problem areas and help to improve services
  • Participate and prepare for surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies
  • Interview applicants for department positions as directed by the DON and make hiring recommendations
  • Provide direct nursing care, as necessary; may carry out a variety of treatments and procedures to assist in the nursing care of various illnesses and other conditions
  • Timely documentation, according to the current Franklin County Medical Center’s Timely Documentation Protocol, is required
  • Maintain confidentiality by protecting sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information. Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control policies and protocols
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to maintain Infection Control Standards as set by the facility
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
