The
University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking a full-time, on-campus, tenure-track
Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Physiology beginning September 1, 2026, for an academic year (9-month) appointment.
This position is responsible for teaching undergraduate, in-person courses in Anatomy and Physiology, with additional teaching opportunities based on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise. The successful candidate may serve as an academic advisor for students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Professional Programs and will have opportunities to develop and deliver courses in UMPI’s innovative Your Pace competency-based education modality.
This role requires collaboration with faculty across Math and Sciences, Health Sciences, and Human Services programs, as well as mentoring students participating in Research Learning Experiences (RLEs). Modest funding for undergraduate-involved research is available through the NIH-funded Maine INBRE program, with additional competitive funding opportunities for faculty-led biomedical research.
The work schedule for this on-campus position will be variable based on the teaching schedule and research demands. Work beyond regular hours, which may include nights and weekends, will be necessary to meet the requirements of the position. Regular office hours on campus will be established.
The salary for Assistant Professor is $64,711 and the salary for Associate Professor is $73,786. A University of Maine System transfer rate may be considered in accordance with UMS policies. Key Responsibilities Instructional and Faculty Activities- Design and deliver undergraduate courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology, with additional offerings in Biology, Exercise Science, or Kinesiology aligned with program needs and the candidate’s expertise.
- Teach four courses (12 contact hours), or equivalent, per semester at introductory and advanced levels, including lecture and laboratory components.
- Develop and deliver online, competency-based curriculum through the Your Pace modality for adult learners and students seeking flexible pacing.
- Utilize effective pedagogical methods to engage students in laboratory, classroom, and asynchronous learning environments.
- Plan and execute scholarly activities, which may include research publications, presentations, and grant funding.
- Serve as an academic advisor for students enrolled in programs within the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Professional Programs.
- Develop scholarly activities that involve undergraduate students, including course-based research, capstone experiences, independent projects, conference presentations, publications, and extramural funding.
- Act as a faculty mentor for students participating in Research Learning Experiences (RLEs).
- Collaborate across the University to support interdisciplinary learning.
- Participate in departmental meetings, university-wide committees, and community outreach initiatives.
- Collaborate with programs and faculty across disciplines to deliver Anatomy and Physiology coursework that prepares students for graduate study in health sciences, health professions, and medical programs.
- A Masters degree in Biology, Human Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, or a closely related field. Individuals with a degree in a healthcare profession are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated experience and motivation to teach at the higher education level, which may include as a teaching assistant.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse faculty and student populations.
- PhD in Biology, Human Physiology, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, or a closely related field (ABD candidates will be considered).
