Overview

This position is located in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) in Prescott, AZ. It is part of the Facilities Maintenance Section of Facilities Management Service. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, repairs, and installations covered by the HVAC Shop throughout the medical center.

Responsibilities
  • The journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, repair, installation, modification, overhaul, troubleshooting and makes adjustments to complex heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment throughout the Medical Center.
  • The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: changing filters and cleaning coil surfaces on a wide variety of heating and cooling equipment, including furnaces, air handling units, and fan coil units.
  • Cleaning and repairing fan coil units, including replacement of multi-speed motors, fans, and switches.
  • Removing covers to fan coil units and making visual and audible checks for dust, dirt, and mechanical and electrical defects.
  • Using prescribed test procedures, voltage testers, and hand tools common to the trade to locate problems and repair fan coil units.
  • Cleaning and purging air from lines so that water will circulate and replacing electrical components such as 3-speed switches, thermostat relays, and thermostats.
  • Repairing or replacing structural components such as tops, doors, knobs, and latches.
  • Replacing pump motors and pumps on all air handling units.
  • Using best trade practices in recovering refrigerant, leak testing, troubleshooting, and other refrigerant tasks; performing preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment including fan coil units, refrigeration air dryers, air compressors, evaporators, belt driven exhaust fans, heating and cooling circulating pumps, chillers, cooling towers, and pumps.
  • Changing filters on air handling units, lubricating motors and bearings, and checking and replacing belts and performing other limited repairs as required.
  • Work schedule:

    Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. The position description is Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD10035A. Physical requirements include bending, reaching, and holding awkward positions for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places, and cramped spaces; considerable climbing, walking, and stooping are also required. The incumbent may handle and carry equipment and tools weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50 pounds either alone or with others. Use of hydraulic lift and dolly and assistance by shop personnel when lifting or transporting heavier objects.

    Work may require working from floors, ladders, platforms, and scaffolding to reach heating and cooling units. The work requires stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and crawling in cramped places.

EXPERIENCE:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to do the work of this position. Evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement will be considered for further rating; those who do not are ineligible and eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair;
Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading);
Materials;
Technical Practices;
Troubleshooting;
Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.

Preferred Experience:

Commercial HVAC/Chiller and Steam Heating Systems. Experience may include paid and unpaid work, volunteering, or through National Service programs. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note:

A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
