The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based care to patients presenting with emergent, urgent, and critical conditions. This role involves rapid assessment, clinical decision-making, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to stabilize, treat, and transfer/admit patients as needed. The RN-ER ensures adherence to hospital protocols, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines suited for a community-based emergency care environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Assessment & Triage
- Perform rapid and accurate triage using ESI or hospital-approved triage protocols.
- Assess physiological, psychological, and social needs of patients of all age groups.
- Initiate emergency interventions based on assessment findings.
- Assist with and independently manage care for critically ill or injured patients.
- Start IV lines, administer medications, manage drips, perform wound care, and support airway management.
- Support physicians with emergent procedures (intubation, central line placement, chest tubes, codes).
- Provide timely care meeting Emergency Department throughput goals.
- Perform continuous monitoring of vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygenation, and patient responses.
- Use EMR systems efficiently to document assessments, medications, interventions, and care plans.
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with legal and hospital documentation requirements.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, hospitalists, EMS personnel, and ancillary staff.
- Participate in critical care team huddles, trauma activations, and code responses.
- Provide clear patient/family education and updates on care status.
- Follow all infection prevention, medication safety, and ER protocols.
- Maintain readiness for emergency situations, disaster preparedness, and rapid response activation.
- Adhere to AZ state nursing regulations, CMS, EMTALA, and hospital standards of care.
Education & Licensure
- Active RN license - State of Arizona or compact state.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS required (AHA-certified).
- TNCC and ENPC preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of recent ER nursing experience in an acute care or critical-access hospital.
- Experience managing trauma, cardiac, stroke, and pediatric emergencies.
- Familiarity with small-hospital ER workflows is an advantage (if applicable to Exceptional Community Hospital size).
- Proficiency in IV therapy, EKG interpretation, ventilator management, and emergency medication administration.
- Strong critical thinking, rapid problem-solving, and prioritization abilities.
- Ability to safely manage multiple patients in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in Critical Access Hospitals or freestanding emergency departments.
- EMTALA knowledge and triage certification.
- Trauma or Advanced Emergency Nursing certifications.
- Ability to lift up to 35-50 lbs, move patients, and stand for long shifts.
- High exposure to traumatic injuries, infectious diseases, and high-stress situations.
- Must adapt quickly to fluctuating census and acuity levels.
