Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Public Works Department – Non-Exempt – Hiring Range: $26.83 to $33.54 per hour (Full Pay Range: $26.83 to $40.25 per hour). Final date to receive applications: 02/10/2026.

Position Summary

Performs assigned duties encompassing all areas of the treatment plant, including operations, laboratory analysis, maintenance, and repair of treatment plant equipment; sampling and testing; supporting projects; and other related work within the Utilities Division.

Essential Duties
  • Monitors the wastewater treatment process to ensure effluent water quality compliance is maintained.
  • facility rounds to perform equipment inspections, record meter reads, and collect data.
  • Collects samples of raw and treated wastewater for lab analysis.
  • Conducts tests to monitor the biological process; troubleshoots process control changes.
  • Monitors pump operation, records pump readings, and programs timers.
  • Operates dewatering equipment; operates and maintains the recharge/reuse effluent delivery system.
  • Maintains buildings and grounds; mows, pulls weeds, cleans up, paints, sweeps, mops, and dusts.
  • Performs laboratory analysis.
  • Performs standard microbiological and analytical analysis of wastewater samples.
  • Maintains documentation as required for lab licensure; maintains daily, monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Assists in repairing process equipment.
  • Operates backhoe and assorted pieces of machinery.
  • Provides accurate documentation and computer data entry.
  • Reports process and equipment failures.
  • Conducts facility tours; answers or refers questions to educate the public regarding the wastewater treatment process and/or effluent delivery system.
  • Assists with snow removal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, laboratory analysis, and/or maintenance is required.

Must possess an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification or be able to obtain within one year of hire. Must obtain Grade II within 18 months of obtaining Grade I and must obtain Grade III within 18 months of obtaining Grade II.

  • Knowledge of various chemicals used in wastewater treatment and their volatility factors.
