Job Description and Position Requirements
The Shaver's Creek Camp Naturalists use available resources, prior knowledge, and new ideas to create a lesson plan for their group each camp week. They provide support and leadership opportunities to assistant camp naturalists and Leaders-In-Training (LITs). They ensure the safety of everyone in the group. Prior experience with children (ideally informal or outdoor education experience) and a growth-oriented mindset are crucial for camp naturalist applicants.
This position blends education, camp fun, and mentorship on a daily basis.

- At the Shaver’s Creek facility, you will work 47–50 hours each week
- Almost all hours are outdoors with children and peers on/along narrow dirt trails in nature
- Access to bathrooms in stalls depends on the day’s schedule, typically every 2–3 hours
- Gear for yourself and activities is carried on you (backpack or provided pack basket), weighing 10–15 lbs
- Pay is $11.50/hour for the first 40 hours per week; hours above 40 earn time and a half
- Returning staff earn an additional $1/hour in this position
- Housing may be available for out-of-area applicants (limited rooms, on a need and first-hire basis)
- Training:
Monday–Friday, typically 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. for the first two full weeks in June - Training includes First Aid, CPR, AED, and Epi-Pens certification (advance certification not required)
- Training time includes peer bonding, child engagement techniques, games and activities, lesson planning guidance, time on trails, emergency procedures, and an overview of a camp day
- Camp week hours:
Mon 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.;
Tue–Thu 8:00 a.m.–5:15 p.m.;
Fri 8:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m.;
Sat 6:00 a.m.–9:00 a.m. (overnight on-site three times per summer) - There is a staff meeting and limited morning prep time, plus end-of-day meetings
- There is a mid-season week (week of July 8, 2026) with on-site hours 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and professional development opportunities
- Full summer commitment (June 1–August 1, 2026) is ideal to maximize the experience
- If full commitment is not possible, at least commit to the two training weeks and three weeks of program

Pre-Season Employment Steps (Mostly Remote)
- Complete the application, interview, and accept an offer of employment
- Complete all steps of the hiring process and required PSU training (e.g., reporting child abuse, COINS, and related trainings)
- Read pre-training materials and create a personal wellness plan for the summer
- Submit forms by deadlines
On-Site Responsibilities (Days/Weeks of Camp)
- Keep everyone safe and communicate effectively
- Uphold PSU and Shaver’s Creek policies around minors and staff
- Lead and engage as a team member, guide lesson planning, and incorporate input from LITs and assistants
- Lead games, activities, songs, and explorative exercises with campers
- Set goals, monitor progress, and provide recognition
- Demonstrate appreciation for others and maintain energy and patience
- Provide medical treatment and maintain records
- Serve as the “Super Naturalist” for up to 1 week for behind-the-scenes logistics and observation of teaching styles
