Position: 2026 Wastewater Heavy Equipment Operator

Overview

The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of right-of-way and infrastructure. Job duties consist of related equipment operation duties. Successful performance contributes to the provision of safe and well-maintained city right-of-way and related infrastructure. FLSA status is Non-Exempt. This position can start at an entry level in the Wastewater Department but has licensing and growth requirements.

Candidates who currently possess all CDL requirements would start at the higher level.

Responsibilities
  • EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS DUTIES (40%) – Operates heavy equipment to maintain and repair sewer right-of-way; removes debris. Maps sewer systems. Clears sewer with hydro-washer; uses attached root cutter to dislodge root blockages. Digs up sewer/water lines. Uses jackhammer to break up pavement. Bush hogs right-of-way and maintains lifting stations. Spreads dirt. Hauls sludge.
  • MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR DUTIES (40%) – Repairs and maintains right-of-way. Inspects sewer lines and diagnoses problems. Installs and repairs sewer lines. Performs construction and repair work on concrete areas around drains, manholes, and sidewalks. May shovel drying beds as needed.
  • EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE DUTIES (10%) – Performs minor technical maintenance to equipment and vehicles; adds fluids, tightens nuts and bolts, oils moving parts, etc. Keeps assigned trucks and equipment clean and supplied for use. Ensures tools and hoses are in good working order and cleaned after use. Runs safety inspection on trucks; notifies supervisor of any major problems.
  • OTHER RELATED DUTIES (10%) – Performs duties in the absence of other Public Works employees. Mixes concrete. Maintains any required records of daily work. Assists in maintaining facilities and grounds. Provides leadership for the assigned crew. Performs other related duties as needed or required.
Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment and vehicles (e.g., backhoe, bulldozer, excavator) is required.
  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions and a Tanker Endorsement. If no CDL or current CDL has restrictions or no Tanker Endorsement, must obtain within nine (9) months of employment.
  • Two (2) years of experience in municipal sewer, sanitation or streets systems with emphasis in construction and maintenance of sewer and drainage systems is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
  • Knowledge of road and right-of-way maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of sewer construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in the use of job-related equipment; tool handling; GPS usage; and the maintenance and operation of job-related vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in problem-solving, oral and written communication, independent judgment and discretion, working under pressure and meeting deadlines, and prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
Supplemental Information
  • Must provide proof of legal right to work in the United States.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Willing to work overtime.
  • Willing to cooperate with the workload of the department.
  • Willing to attend continuing education courses.
  • Willing to comply with City of Prattville rules and regulations.
  • Must submit to drug screenings for this safety sensitive position.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
