General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. Under general directions with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems with a defined focus on opto-mechanical design, optimization, build, and test.
This position will serve as an opto-mechanical engineering lead supporting multiple programs in GA-ASI’s Advanced Sciences and Technology group. It includes planning engineering projects, developing innovative designs, performing difficult or complex engineering work, documenting findings, communicating results, making technical presentations, and representing the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Leadership of moderately experienced professional staff may be required.
& RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the optical design process to ensure opto-mechanical mounting and optimization is accounted for in early-phase designs.
- Generate optical system performance analyses with opto-mechanical elements integrated into the design.
- Interact directly with vendors to acquire mounting hardware.
- Build, mount, align, and test fully integrated opto-mechanical systems.
- Support operation of engineering systems and document any problems.
- Devise new approaches to resolve unusual or complex engineering problems.
- Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
- Provide documentation and make technical presentations as required.
- Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
- Provide direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
- Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Observe all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
- Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience: four or more years with a bachelor's degree or two or more years with a master's degree; equivalent engineering experience may substitute for education.
- Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties; ability to understand new concepts quickly, apply them accurately, organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases, and determine the appropriate approach to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
- Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
- A Professional Engineering License is desirable.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Security Clearance is required.
