The Nursing Supervisor is a member of the management staff of Patient Care Services, participating in the development and implementation of the organization’s philosophy and goals to effectively operate patient care services. The Supervisor serves as the on‑site Administrator during weekend, evening, night, and holiday hours, communicating directly with the assigned Administrator‑on‑Call.
Responsibilities- Assess and refer appropriate issues to the Administrator‑on‑Call.
- Coordinate all hospital codes and manage public and guest relations issues, preventing complaints and initiating process improvements.
- Investigate facts, reach conclusions, and make timely decisions or recommendations.
- Conduct performance appraisals of Float Pool Staff and address employee performance issues through coaching, counseling, or discipline.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements affecting care delivery and operations.
- Oversee coordination with other disciplines, maintaining effective communication with hospital employees, department, and medical staff.
- Monitor staff absenteeism and lateness; facilitate screening processes before admission.
- Advise on discharges, referrals, and transfers; develop mentors and motivate staff to ensure safe, quality patient care.
- Recommend changes in equipment, processes, and systems based on evidence of staff, patient, or environmental needs, supporting hospital operations.
- Ensure adherence to patient safety goals.
- Assist in developing processes that promote cost‑effective, efficient care; initiate programs to increase efficiencies.
- Complete daily census reports and participate in hospital committees or task forces.
- Effectively assign patients to rooms/units for appropriate bed utilization and delivery of care; maintain safe, cost‑effective staffing levels in conjunction with Staffing Coordinators and Nurse Managers.
- Identify ways to reduce agency staff use and provide solutions for staffing problems.
- Carry out delegated functions for departments without 24‑hour coverage and maintain current knowledge of their operating policies.
- Collect and document data for specific projects and programs; complete assignments within required time frames.
- Evaluate the quality of care by making rounds for quality improvement, nursing practice evaluation, and patient satisfaction.
- Provide direct clinical intervention and supervision in patient care areas; serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff.
- Offer individual guidance and direction for nursing practice; empower, encourage, and foster staff growth through education, mentoring, and clinical training (e.g., Dermal Wound, MAK, Accudose).
- Registered Nurse with a minimum of five years of full‑time acute care experience.
- At least two years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required;
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or certification in Nursing Administration preferred. - Current New York State Nursing License.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Experience in BLS, ACLS, TNCC, ENPC, or PALS instruction preferred.
- Knowledge and application of universal precautions, personal protective equipment, and infection control policies.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
