Overview

The Athletics Department at Marist University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month position as Head Football Athletic Trainer. This position reports to the Associate Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Health and Performance. Athletic Trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. ATs work under the direction of a physician, as prescribed by licensure statutes.

This role is responsible for the care and coverage of a Division I football team (FCS) with 110 student-athletes and a Division I Water Polo team with 20 student-athletes. Both teams are high risk and require advanced emergency care skills and administrative workload.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training or Exercise Science
  • BOC National Certification
  • NYS Licensed Athletic Trainer
  • CPR/AED Certified
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Valid driver’s license with no serious convictions
Essential Functions Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation
  • Assess student-athletes to screen for potential injuries or risk factors that would increase injury risk
  • Design and implement rehabilitation plans after assessing injuries
  • Select, apply, and evaluate therapeutic interventions using evidence-based research
  • Assess functional status, interpret results, and determine return-to-sport eligibility
  • Obtain and interpret environmental data (e.g., temperature, humidity, heat index, lightning) and student-athlete data (e.g., hydration)
  • Design and implement emergency action plans
Clinical Evaluation & Diagnosis
  • Examine student-athletes with acute, subacute, chronic musculoskeletal disorders or medical conditions and provide diagnosis
  • Consult with other health care providers as needed
  • Oversee concussion protocol
Immediate & Emergency Care
  • Provide medical coverage for team practices and competitions
  • Travel with and provide health care services to assigned teams for off-campus events
  • Act as on-call health care provider for assigned sports
  • Maintain relationships with local EMS and campus Safety and Security
  • Provide emergency care under Department of Sports Medicine policies and standing orders with supervising team physicians
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of chain of command in injury management
Professional Development
  • Maintain certification through the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
  • Complete Evidence-Based Practice CEUs
  • Maintain New York State Licensure/Registration
  • Maintain current CPR and AED certification (valid for two years)
  • Participate in Department of Athletics activities
Consultation & Communication
  • Record evaluation findings and update clinical notes daily
  • Communicate health information with players, coaches, physicians, etc.
  • Work with team physicians to provide continuum of care and consult with outside physicians
Organization & Healthcare Administration
  • Serve as liaison between team physicians, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents; make referrals as needed
  • Coordinate with local healthcare providers, team physicians, and surgeons
  • Coordinate medical-related transportation of athletes
  • Report to Coordinator of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Athletics; interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Complete and maintain insurance injury reports and liaise with insurance providers
Internal Office Assignments
  • Coordinate staffing/scheduling for summer camps/clinics for proper medical coverage
  • Coordinate rehabilitation programs
  • Coordinate Athletic Training Students’ orientation and education
  • Certify CPR/AED/First Aid for all athletic department staff
  • Coordinate inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment (AEDs, modalities)
