Purpose

Performs patient care activities and non-professional services. These include addressing the personal, physical and emotional needs of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, or geriatric patient and family. Practice must be consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Nursing Department and Medical Center administration. Population served based on scope of services in the department.

Education and Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• AHA BLS healthcare provider certification required within 90 days from date of hire.
• Minimum of three (3) months experience as a PCT or currently in a junior semester of an Associates or Bachelor’s nursing program.

Requirements

• General knowledge of high school subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures / terminology, and office equipment.
• BLS certification is required 90 days from date of hire.

Essential Responsibilities

• Assists in the delivery of patient care by performing specific patient care tasks per scope of service and as directed by the Registered Nurse.
• Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges and transport of patients.
• Obtains and records vital signs and other measurements; reports abnormalities to primary nurse promptly.
• Performs advanced skills such as oral suctioning, enemas, clean dressings after RN assessment, tube feeding set-up, external catheter, post-mortem care, etc.
• Communicates effectively with health care team members; documents legibly on all hospital forms; participates in shift change reports.
• Provides personalized care to patients and families; identifies and documents special needs.
• Utilizes educational materials and attends mandatory in-services to maintain unit competencies.
• Uses equipment and time safely, therapeutically and cost-effectively.
• Assists with code situations under direction of the Code Blue Team.
• Adheres to infection control practices and safety policies.
• Maintains general cleanliness and appearance of unit areas.
• Acts in accordance with REACH Values.
• Demonstrates reliable attendance.
• Performs other duties as required.

Working Conditions

• Manual: significant manual skills/motor coordination and finger dexterity.
• Occupational: some occupational risk.
• Physical Effort: very heavy effort, may exert up to 50 lbs.
• Physical Environment: significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
