The Radiologic Technologist performs radiographic procedures, producing images for the interpretation by, or at the request of a licensed independent practitioner. Radiographers must demonstrate an understanding of the human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. They must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique, as well as knowledge of radiation protection and safety. Radiographers must remain sensitive to the physical, cultural, and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills.
Radiographers actively participate in a dual role while working in the clinical environment. Duties include but are not limited to patient registration, scheduling, clerical support, and customer service. Basic medical assistant duties may be performed by a radiologic technologist after training and competency are demonstrated. Medical assistant duties may include triaging patients under the direction and supervision of the provider, which includes functions such as obtaining height and weight, vital signs, and specific point of care testing.
