Summary:

SK&A Structural Engineers is seeking a personable, team-focused, highly motivated, and results-oriented individual to join our highly regarded Structural Repair and Restoration team. The ideal candidate should be interested in providing consulting to clients about best practices to repair and restore existing structures. As part of the SK&A family, Interns work closely with project engineers, project managers, Principals, and other key team members - owner/owner's rep, contractors - to deliver sound, innovative, and cost-effect design solutions.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Testing and Inspection Intern responsibilities include shadowing current engineers as they:

• Assist with condition assessments of existing structures including visual survey, field measurements, repair quantity take-offs, etc.

• Performing chain drag and mason's hammer sounding of reinforced concrete during surveys and during construction to identify corrosion-related deterioration and to layout concrete repair locations and sizes on plans.

• Receive training for and perform testing during structure and building envelope evaluations including water testing, NDE concrete testing, etc.

• Perform inspections and observations during concrete repairs including contractor repair layout verification, shoring installation review, post-demolition surface preparation and repair detailing review, reinforcing steel cleaning and supplemental steel placement review, and as-built repair quantity measurement.

• During concrete pours, review batch tickets for conformance with approved concrete mix design, test fresh concrete for temperature, slump, and air content, and take cylinder or mortar samples for compressive strength testing. Inspect placement procedures, inspect curing procedures after concrete placement, and coordinate transportation of cylinders and cubes for testing.

• Perform inspection and observations of other structural restoration construction work including structural steel, brick masonry, waterproofing, coatings, sealants, flashings, roofing, etc. to confirm compliance with contract documents including specifications, drawings, and approved submittals.

• Author field reports with descriptions of observations, list of as-built quantities verified, summary of action items, and photographs for each field visit performed. For concrete pours, provide cylinder test data sheets documenting information related to samples taken.

• Receive training for and observe/or perform field tests during construction such as water testing, bond testing, or other procedures for quality assurance.

• Expect significant percentage of work to be field work at local project sites primarily within the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area with isolated out-of-town travel.

• Night and weekend work will be required from time to time.

Qualifications:

• Will work towards obtaining a Concrete Level I Technician certification through WACEL or equivalent organization

• Must be physically able to perform field inspections in a variety of property types, construction sites, and sometimes in challenging conditions/locations. This position will regularly require…
