Reports To

Superintendent, Project Manager

Summary of Position

Supervise employees performing general labor and/or cleaning work functions for a designated job or jobs. Maintain a high quality of workmanship while supervising the workforce. Work with other foremen and shipyard employees to coordinate the job. Inspect all assigned equipment for proper working conditions. Perform repairs as necessary. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.

May be assigned workforce oversight in other areas of company operations to support critical activities.

Job Requirements

Perform duties under the leadership of superintendents/project managers. Communicate effectively during work product inspections, represent our work during inspections with customers/customer representatives. Organize, supervise, lead, and train employees to complete projects within established guidelines and timeframe and in accordance with standard operating procedures. Provide oral and/or written instruction to workers. Supervise labor crew in all essential job requirements as required or assigned.

Submit timesheets of assigned workforce. Inspect assigned areas of work and correct any area not up to standard. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the superintendent/project manager. Often required to make decisions. All the above shall be performed in a safe and timely manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Must direct large numbers of employees at one time in a productive and safe manner. Directly supervise employees and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, making recommendations for hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Working Conditions

Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. Safety clothing and devices required to protect eyes, head, or hearing. Shift work and overtime involved most of the time. Travel may be required.

Aptitude

Requirements
  • Must be able to do simple to complex math.
  • Must be able to carry out written or verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to problem solve, organize, and prioritize work.
Required Education

Must read and write with understanding.

Required Experience

Formal or informal on-the-job training and 3 years experience in the marine industry.

Required Skills
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as job specifications, maintenance manuals, safety manuals, etc.
  • Required to direct employees in a productive and professional manner.
Physical Requirements
  • Stamina required; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and crawl.
  • Required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip or handle; regularly required to lift and/or move heavy objects.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to use vision for up close, distant, and peripheral inspections.
  • Must be able to see in dim, dusty conditions.
  • Must be able to wear dust mask and/or respirator.
  • Physical agility required.
Equipment Used

Pneumatic tools, electric tools, hand tools, vacuums, vacuum bottles, vac, compressors/compressed air, and other tools used in the maritime blasting and coating industry. Items listed are a representative sample but not an all-inclusive list.
