Job Summary
The Surgical Tech Certified Cardiac Team assists surgeons and nurses with patient care, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and gathering patient and case‑specific supplies and equipment. The team prepares the operating room by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment, and obtains special supplies indicated by the physician. The team also sets up and operates a variety of specialized instrumentation, manual and powered equipment.
EssentialFunctions
- Serve as the scrub person and assist during operative and other invasive procedures by assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
- Prepare and organize sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure and perform surgical counts with the circulating RN.
- Maintain an organized sterile field and ensure sterility by taking corrective action as needed; assist with placement of sterile drapes; provide instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure while maintaining aseptic technique.
- Retrieve and collect specimens, labeling specimens.
- Report any implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to circulator; provide complete case preparation.
- Adapt to special instruments, supplies, and equipment needs for different patient populations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of patient rights and responsibilities according to patient's age and understanding.
- Demonstrate understanding of patient's Advance Directives.

Education- Associate degree, Vocational Certification, or Military Certificate in Surgical Technology (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
- Certified in one of the following (required):
Certified Surgical Technologist – The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Certified Surgical First Technologist – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - If employed in South Carolina NBSTSA certification is required. If certified prior to 2008 NBSTSA or NCCT certification is accepted.
- If employed in Virginia, must be certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor and hold a certification with the Virginia Board of Medicine.
- 2 years' experience in an Operating Room (required)
- Experience in cardiovascular operating room (preferred)
- Monitor patient conditions during treatment
- Inform medical professionals regarding patient conditions and care
