This Outstanding 11–18 secondary school in Portsmouth (Fratton area) is renowned for its safe environment, excellent behaviour, and exceptionally well‑maintained campus. The school continues to invest heavily in its site, which includes modern academic buildings, sports facilities, landscaped outdoor areas, and a newly refurbished sixth form centre.

The Site Team is highly valued and plays a crucial role in the school’s successful daily operation. Staff describe the environment as friendly, well‑structured, and collaborative. Leadership recognises the importance of maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient school site, and supports caretakers with resources, training, and clear operational procedures.

Role Information

The school is seeking a reliable, proactive, and skilled Caretaker to join their dedicated site management team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out general maintenance, repairs, and site upkeep

  • Opening and securing the school buildings (including key‑holder duties)

  • Ensuring all areas of the school are safe, clean, and operational

  • Conducting routine inspections and reporting maintenance issues

  • Supporting health & safety compliance, risk assessments, and fire procedures

  • Monitoring heating, lighting, and energy systems

  • Managing deliveries, moving furniture, and setting up rooms for events

  • Overseeing contractors and ensuring work meets safety standards

  • Responding to emergency maintenance situations promptly

  • Supporting large school events, parents’ evenings, and community lettings

This role requires a practical, hands‑on approach and a commitment to maintaining high site standards.

Requirements
  • Experience in maintenance, caretaking, or facilities work

  • Good understanding of health & safety and site security

  • Ability to carry out repairs, manual handling, and basic DIY tasks

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently

  • Strong communication skills and positive attitude

  • Willingness to work occasional evenings/weekends when required

  • Ability to carry out physical duties (e.g., lifting, moving equipment)

  • Commitment to safeguarding and creating a safe environment
