Safety and Environment Engineer

Meritus is recruiting an experienced Safety and Regulatory Compliance Engineer for Portsmouth, UK on a 6‑month contract. The role is INSIDE IR35, paying £70 per hour via Umbrella and requires an existing Security Clearance.

About the Role

You’ll play a key part in ensuring safety and environmental compliance across a range of technically advanced engineering programmes, including military satellite communications and related defence systems. Working within multi‑disciplinary project teams, you’ll be responsible for ensuring all activities meet the highest safety, environmental, and regulatory standards throughout the full engineering lifecycle.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Develop and maintain Safety and Environmental Management Plans (SEMP) and Safety and Environmental Cases (SECR).
  • Chair Safety and Environmental Committee meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support product development to meet UK and EU regulatory requirements, including technical files and Declarations of Conformity.
  • Undertake or facilitate safety and environmental risk assessments across projects.
  • Provide expert advice to project and product teams on all safety, environmental and regulatory compliance matters.
What You’ll Need
  • Proven experience with MOD Safety and Environmental Management processes, including ASEMS, DEF STAN 00-056 / 00-051, POSMS / POEMS.
  • Strong understanding of UK and EU product compliance legislation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Background in defence, aerospace or communications sector highly desirable.
  • Experience with military satellite communications (MILSATCOM), particularly in maritime domains, is an advantage.
  • Active SC Clearance is essential.
