Outreach Teaching Assistant – SEMH School / Alternative Provision – Portsmouth

Salary:
Band G, £32,061‑36,363 per annum (actual salary for 37 hrs per week, term time plus 1 week £28,115‑31,887 per annum). Plus generous sick pay and pension scheme.

Please note:

Must have a full clean driving licence and be willing to use your vehicle for school business – mileage paid at 45p per mile. Ideally located in Portsmouth.

Academics are looking for an experienced, passionate Outreach Teaching Assistant who is creative, empathetic and able to build strong relationships with highly vulnerable and challenging students who are unable to access mainstream education. The suitable candidate will be someone looking for an education support / pastoral / mentor role that fits outside the box.

You will be required to work with pupils on a 1:1 basis and help reignite their love for learning, build their confidence, be a trusted adult, and help them believe in themselves. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to make a real difference in the lives of young people who face significant barriers to education.

Responsibilities
  • Support students in breaking down barriers and deliver structured interventions to support academic, social and emotional development.
  • Develop, deliver and evaluate a dynamic programme of creative and accredited learning opportunities, including Individual Learning Plans and Educational Health Care Plans.
  • Assess and monitor student progress.
  • Bring patience, creativity and a sense of humour to everyday challenges of alternative education.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships to help students overcome challenges.
  • Deliver support, adapting learning to meet individual needs by creating a welcoming, safe and stimulating learning environment.
  • Encourage confidence, resilience and self‑esteem in young people, helping students see their potential.
  • Use trauma‑informed and restorative approaches to help students feel safe, valued and understood.
  • Translate a "I’m not doing it" into a "Alright, I’ll give it a go".
Qualifications
  • Experience working with children with SEMH needs.
  • A team player who thrives in a supportive, passionate environment, working collaboratively with staff, parents and external agencies.
  • An NVQ Level 4 or equivalent with solid literacy and numeracy skills.
  • A relationship builder who is adaptable and resilient; every day is different and challenges require creative solutions.
  • Passionate about inclusive education and committed to helping young people succeed.
