Educational / Training / Experience / Skills Required
  • Master’s Degree required (Doctorate preferred)
  • RI Certification as Superintendent of Schools
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience
  • Minimum of five years of successful administrative experience with evidence of specific experience related to Curriculum and Instruction
  • Understanding of the alignment between assessment and student outcomes
  • Experience in planning and conducting professional development
  • Outstanding presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills to foster school‑based collaboration
  • Strong organizational and writing skills
  • Demonstrable ability to effectively address complex district‑wide issues utilizing a problem‑solving approach
  • Capable of responding simultaneously to a variety of requests from district administrators, staff, public agencies, parents, and the community
  • Capable of working collegially with all levels of administration and staff
  • Position Summary

    The Deputy Superintendent assists the Superintendent in the overall leadership, administration, and operation of the Portsmouth School Department. This position provides district wide leadership for teaching and learning, with primary responsibility for curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development, and academic rigor. The Deputy Superintendent ensures that all students have equitable access to high‑quality instruction and the academic and social‑emotional supports necessary to achieve college and career readiness.

    The Deputy Superintendent also supports the implementation of the District’s Strategic Plan, state and federal initiatives, and evidence‑based best practices to improve student achievement while ensuring effective and efficient daily operations across the district.

    Essential Functions Instructional Leadership and Academic Programs
  • Leads the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s PreK–12 instructional programs to ensure rigor, coherence, and alignment with state standards and district goals.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators and faculty to promote horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment across all grade levels.
  • Oversees curriculum development, instructional materials selection, and textbook adoption in collaboration with administrators and faculty.
  • Ensures all district curriculum is reviewed and approved by the School Committee in accordance with district policies and educational goals.
  • Stays current with educational research, best practices, and innovations in curriculum and instruction, and leads the implementation of appropriate instructional strategies and programs.
  • Assessment, Data, and Student Achievement
  • Oversees the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of student achievement and assessment data.
  • Identifies district strengths and areas for growth and develops data‑informed recommendations to improve instruction and student outcomes.
  • Provides leadership for intervention programs and specialized instruction, including services for Multilingual Learners (MLLs).
  • Equity, Access, and Specialized Programs
  • Oversees the district’s Multilingual Learner (MLL) program, ensuring equitable access to curriculum, resources, and instructional supports.
  • Ensures educational programs meet the needs of all learners, including students requiring specialized instruction and services.
  • Interprets curriculum and instructional initiatives and changes for the School Committee, staff, families, and community members.
  • Oversees all requests related to students experiencing homelessness and serves as the District’s Homelessness Liaison.
  • Professional Development
  • Leads the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, multi‑faceted professional development program for administrators, certified staff, and non‑certified staff.
