Under the supervision of the Director of Public Works, the Construction Inspector provides construction inspection and materials testing support for City projects and subdivisions by reviewing plans for compliance, physically visiting the projects to perform inspections, meeting with relevant parties to discuss findings, observing and interpreting materials testing, and maintaining detailed records on construction inspection findings. The position performs complex inspecting and analyses to ensure the safety and compliance of projects by ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, various codes, and departmental policies.

The position also serves as a City liaison for contractors, architects, and engineers on applicable city capital improvement projects. This position works under general supervision of the Director of Public Works and has moderate discretion for decision making.

Essential Functions
  • Collects and conveys information for approval of needed changes to approved project plans and obtains proper documentation for these changes
  • Responds to citizen concerns regarding construction sites and right of ways
  • Coordinates with in-house crews for taps and tie in points
  • Tracks and reports on the status of construction projects
  • Verify plans and materials comply with City Standards
  • Attends and provides input during all project meetings including predesign, preconstruction, and construction progress meetings

This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.

Qualifications
  • High school or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to obtain a technical certificate within 6 months to a year.
  • Over three years of related experience required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others, oral and written.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather including extreme heat and cold with extended periods of time exposed to the outside elements.
