Position SummaryPortland State University (PSU) is Oregon’s most affordable public research university, located in the heart of one of America’s most dynamic cities. The mission to "let knowledge serve the city" is reflected in our commitment to turning ideas into action through partnerships with students, community partners, and the broader Portland community. This position is part of the Administrative Services department within the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC).
The Confidential Advocate will provide confidential, legally‑privileged advocacy services—such as safety planning, academic and housing accommodations, financial aid, accompaniment throughout reporting processes, emotional support, and referrals—to students in the university community who have experienced gender‑based violence (relationship violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, or stalking). The Advocate will work closely with campus and community partners to formulate strategies that best serve survivors and the community, provide direct advocacy services and training to students, faculty, staff, and promote survivor‑centered responses to disclosures of violence.
This role is in‑person with no remote work option.
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 2 years’ full‑time equivalent experience working directly with survivors of interpersonal/gender‑based violence, providing trauma‑informed care, and working with underserved and marginalized communities or in a counseling related field
- Willingness to obtain the required state‑level certifications for campus advocacy within the first three months of hire
- Demonstrated understanding of current best practices in responding to interpersonal trauma
- Successful completion of a background check
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience OR Master’s degree and 1 year of related experience
- Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
- Seek opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
- Adhere to all of PSU’s policies, including policies on prohibited discrimination & harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct.
Contribute to a culture of environmental stewardship, practice resource conservation, and actively work toward achieving long‑term sustainability goals.
