Department OverviewThe Division of Infectious Diseases' mission is to provide expert care for patients with complex infections, conduct innovative research, and provide exceptional education.
The individual filling this position will investigate mechanisms by which the fungal pathogen Coccidioides causes infections, aiming to develop novel treatments. The role involves a multidisciplinary group studying Coccidioides pathogenesis, including secreted proteases and host interactions.
Key responsibilities include biocontainment protocols, fungal culture, gene deletion with CRISPR/Cas9, microscopy, RNA‑seq, genomic DNA isolation, next‑gen sequencing, cell culture, macrophage infections, immunoprecipitations, western blotting, biochemical assays for protease activity, and other duties as assigned. The position offers exposure to molecular skills, genetics, and microscopy in a dynamic research environment, and includes laboratory organization, biosafety level 3 facility duties, and presentation of findings.
Function/Dutiesof Position
- Experimental studies on the pathogenesis of Coccidioides
- Laboratory management
- Bachelor's Degree (4 yr) with major courses relevant to field of research
- 1–2 years of relevant research experience (molecular biology/cell culture/pathogenesis)
- Detailed lab record keeping
- Proficient with pipetting, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast‑moving environment
- 2–3 years of relevant research experience (molecular biology/cell culture/pathogenesis)
- Ability to perform PAGE analysis, western blotting, cell culture, mouse husbandry
- Work schedule:
generally 40 hours per week, 8–5, Monday–Friday; occasional non‑standard hours (nights/weekends) and travel for conferences. Work is primarily in a scientific laboratory, including a BSL3 containment lab. - Requires full workday of laboratory science routinely; some weekends and evenings may be required. Ability to carry/lift up to 40 lbs.; continuous use of computer keyboards and lab equipment; standing/sitting > 6 hours/day; work in BSL3 lab with respirator.
