Department OverviewThe appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor, Carsten Schultz, in furtherance of the university's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The role involves preparative scale chemistry work, biophysical characterization, and mass spectrometry. Responsibilities include synthesizing, purifying, analyzing, and testing compounds, with experience in lipid and inositol chemistry and familiarity with phosphorylation reagents required.
Function/Duties- Perform chemical synthesis, purification, spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, biochemical analyses (PCR, Western blots, imaging studies).
- Contribute to experimental design and overall direction of the project.
- Identify and implement appropriate methods.
- Train newcomers to experimental procedures.
- Documentation and data management:
- Maintain accurate laboratory records.
- Back up data, assist with analysis.
- Assist PI with experimental design and data analysis.
- Communication:
- Regularly report progress to supervisor and team.
- Participate in lab meetings.
- Assist with presentation of results (abstracts, papers, presentations).
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education and Experience:
- PhD in a relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience.
- Or Master’s Degree in a relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience.
- Or Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field AND 9 years of relevant experience.
- Experience must include preparative organic synthesis (small and large scale), chromatography (HPLC, TLC), NMR and TLC data analysis.
- Experience in lipid chemistry.
- Experience in inositol chemistry.
- Experience in phosphorylation reactions with phosphorous(III) reagents.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Planning experimental design and/or designing SOPs.
- Managing specific components of research projects and training others.
- Creativity and problem‑solving.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail.
- Good communication skills; teamwork.
- Judgment in independent action, seeking advice when needed.
- Preparation of written reports and regulatory documentation.
- PhD in Chemistry with seven years as a bench chemist.
- Working knowledge of Oracle for ordering.
Variable work schedule including evenings and weekends, but to equal 40 hours per week.
