Wildlife Field Technician – Avian Fatality Monitoring - Near Maupin, OR

Tetra Tech is adding a Wildlife Field Technician to support avian post-construction fatality monitoring at an operational solar facility near Maupin, Oregon. This is a field-based, seasonal position requiring a full commitment to eight contiguous business days over a two-week period, repeated from March through October 2026.

The primary responsibility of this role is to implement and continue a standardized post-construction fatality monitoring program, including fatality searches and carcass persistence trials, while collecting accurate and detailed data in accordance with established protocols.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct avian fatality searches and carcass persistence trials following standardized protocols
  • Accurately collect, record, and submit field data using electronic data collection systems
  • Walk established transects and survey areas for extended periods
  • Identify avian species endemic to the region
  • Work independently or as part of a small field crew
  • Communicate effectively with offsite Tetra Tech supervisors and site management teams
  • Follow all solar facility-specific and Tetra Tech health and safety protocols
  • Interact professionally with project managers, clients, and landowners
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Work Schedule & Commitment:

  • Field work occurs March through October 2026
  • Requires eight consecutive business days over a two-week period (weekends are not an option)
  • Includes travel to and from the field location
  • Full availability for the project timeframe is required
  • A company vehicle will be provided for work-related travel and job functions.
  • Travel time to the field site will be compensated for up to two hours roundtrip
    .

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field preferred (not required)
  • Prior field experience strongly preferred; experience with birds is highly desirable
  • Experience executing transect-based research preferred
  • Ability to identify regional avian species
  • Skilled use of GPS units, topographic maps, and other field equipment
  • Ability to follow instructions and collect precise, thorough data
  • Comfortable using electronic data collection tools and meeting submission deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain a positive attitude while accepting guidance and feedback
  • Individuals currently pursuing a degree and enthusiastic entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk 8–10 miles daily for the duration of the project
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stand, and lift/carry objects weighing up to 35 lbs
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods on uneven terrain
  • Tolerance for working in a wide range of weather conditions and exposure to bird carcasses
  • Outdoor field-based work at an operational solar facility
  • Prolonged walking or standing on various terrain
  • Exposure to weather extremes, including heat, wind, and precipitation

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and no restrictions
  • Pre-employment drug screen required in compliance with state regulations
  • Preference given candidates residing in The Dalles, OR
    , or willing to relocate
