Overview

The Director of Clinical Education and Professional Development is the strategic leader responsible for advancing nursing education and professional development throughout Legacy’s patient care enterprise, encompassing registered nurses, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), and other clinical nursing related roles.

This department provides direct oversight of the nurse Residency program, building the next generation of nurses, and manages general nursing orientation to ensure foundational clinical training for all nurses joining the Legacy team. The Director leads the nurse simulation training lab, oversees the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) program, and directs Code Gray training to maintain clinical competency and preparedness. This position requires a keen understanding of how to balance high-quality educational initiatives with the operational demands that training hours create on a department.

The Director supervises a total team size of 28 people and collaborates extensively with hospital-based nursing teams, clinical leaders, and key medical staff. The position unifies nursing education under a shared vision, mission, and purpose, fostering organizational alignment and driving excellence in patient care.

Responsibilities

This role requires exceptional interpersonal communication, collaboration and conflict management skills. In addition, good organizational and project management skills. Knowledge and ability to apply adult learning principles requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

GENERAL

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Academic Relationships and Student Placement:

  • Builds and sustains Legacy’s clinical academic relationships and ensures optimal student and faculty experiences in Legacy facilities.

RN Onboarding, Residency and Transition Programs:

  • Responsible for the design development and management of nursing onboarding including general nursing orientation, preceptor training, and standardized specialty-based education and competencies. This role provides leadership oversight to nurse residency and specialty transition programs to meet the workforce needs of Legacy’s clinical enterprise.

Clinical Excellence and Evidence Based Practice:

  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of applicable statutory, regulatory and administrative requirements relative to departmental operations/accreditation and accountable for the department’s compliance with the same.
  • Monitors and tracks key metrics of the Legacy nursing workforce collaboratively with Clinical Resource Management.

Clinical

Competency:

  • Conducts a systematic assessment of clinical learning needs and plans for the development and delivery of educational programming designed to facilitate and support the professional development, ensure clinical competence of caregivers and consistency in application of LH patient care standards.
  • Establishes and maintains a standardized process for the assessment and documentation for clinical competency.

Clinical and Nursing Education, and Simulation:

  • Theories and principles of education are utilized to support and evaluate the education of patients, families, pre-professional, graduate and continuing education of nurses and other health care providers.
  • Collaborates with nursing and program leadership to identify educational and clinical activities to advance clinical skills, promote evidence-based practice and facilitate professional nursing development.
  • Oversees management of LH (Peterson) Nursing Education Center, BLS training center, simulation program and de-escalation training programs.

Consultation:

  • Provides system, organizational and clinical expertise on program/departmental, hospital, and system-wide committees and task forces.
  • Participates with leadership to plan for the establishment and implementation of strategic nursing, program, and organizational goals.
  • Provides leadership in maintaining a supportive and healthy work environment.

COMPETENCIES:
