General Summary
The Oncology Nurse Coordinator supports physicians and mid-level providers by delivering comprehensive assessment, treatment, testing, and education for oncology patients. This role is vital in coordinating all aspects of oncology and hematology care within a multidisciplinary team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Manage and coordinate oncology and hematology treatment plans, ensuring adherence to established protocols and maintaining a safe, sterile environment.
- Evaluate patient care plans continuously and prepare patients for appointments by screening and verifying necessary assessments and test results.
- Update and review medication and summary lists in collaboration with providers, documenting all patient care accurately in medical records.
- Verify medication dosages for treatment plans and assist with examinations and procedures within scope of practice.
- Coordinate care with internal and external ancillary services, including specialty pharmacies and supportive services.
- Provide counseling and education to patients and families on all aspects of oncology and hematology, including preventative measures.
- Maintain authorization for patient medications and procedures, oversee sample medications, and ensure quality control logs are up to date.
- Administer medications safely according to protocol and assist in maintaining emergency equipment such as crash carts.
- Ensure all instruments are sterile and ready for procedures, access implanted ports using sterile technique, and collaborate with care teams to maintain a safe continuum of care.
- Document treatments, observations, and investigational protocol information as required, ensuring patient understanding of investigational drugs.
- Maintain ongoing oncology education requirements as mandated by accrediting bodies.
- Demonstrate accountability, adaptability, and professionalism while working independently and under pressure.
Graduation from an accredited RN program is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
ExperienceAt least one year of healthcare experience is preferred.
Certification/LicenseCurrent RN license in a Compact state is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is mandatory. Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) is preferred.
Mental/Physical RequirementsThis role requires considerable mental focus, the ability to lift up to 35 lbs., and frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working ConditionsExposure to communicable diseases, radiation, anti‑neoplastic agents, sharps, and other biohazardous materials is frequent. The ability to function effectively under stress is essential.
