Position Summary

As a Boilermaker and Fitter Supervisor, this position is responsible for supervising Boilermaker, Fitter and Ship fitter type work in the shipyard across multiple projects. The supervisor coordinates all equipment and labor for the assigned craft, planning labor, materials, tools and equipment, change orders and job hazard analyses. The incumbent may supervise lower-level supervisors in the same craft area and must be self-disciplined, resourceful, and willing to accept responsibility for the assigned crafts.

Functions and Major Responsibilities

  • Lead and communicate company safety culture and policies; conduct safety meetings; hold employees accountable for safe practices; provide input on improving safety.
  • Collaborate with project managers or ship superintendents on planning, staffing, scheduling, tools, materials, equipment, and subcontracts.
  • Supervise assigned employees, including lower-level supervisors; assign tasks, ensure deadlines are met, resolve conflicts, apply disciplinary action with management oversight, and reassign across projects; document turnovers at shift changes; apply understanding of the Union contract.
  • Coordinate regulatory agency compliance for assigned crafts; ensure work meets proper practices and specifications.
  • Prepare condition found reports (CFR), change orders, and job hazard analyses (JHA); teach others to prepare CFR, JHA, and change orders.
  • Communicate changes in practices or policies; model company direction; provide constructive suggestions for practice improvements; act as a leadership presence among peers.
  • Train, coach, and mentor other supervisors in staffing, scheduling, and higher-level supervisory functions.
  • Assist estimating department as required for bidding work.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
  • Journey level experience as a Boilermaker or Fitter with recent shipyard environment experience.
  • At least three years’ experience as a Boilermaker Supervisor or Fitter Supervisor in an industrial environment with demonstrated leadership ability.
Knowledges, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of marine-related equipment, ship repair and construction techniques; sequencing of ship repair activities; shipyard safety practices; and complex mathematical principles as applied to shipping activities.

Ability to present information clearly to groups of managers and employees; demonstrate leadership; read, understand, and apply ship repair specifications, blueprints, technical procedures, and regulations; identify production problems and adjust; direct, coach, and motivate others; resolve conflicts; coordinate multiple project details simultaneously.

Skill in directing and coordinating the work of others; operate a PC and standard office software; interpret technical instructions; work with abstract and concrete variables; resolve conflicts; use required tools.

Physical Demands

The role requires maneuvering in a shipyard to oversee work, with extensive walking and standing, climbing, crouching, twisting and stooping. It may involve lifting or handling heavy equipment. Work is outdoors or on-board ships in various weather conditions.

Work Environment

The work environment is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work on or inside ships and travel in ship repair yards.

This role is with a federally contracted employer and is subject to regulations restricting employment to US Persons. Successful candidates will provide documentation of status.
