Hourly Rate: $40.26

Position Summary

This position handles the mechanical maintenance, occasional emergent repair of ships, and, at times, yard mechanical maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures
  • Takes direction and requires limited guidance to conduct assignment
  • Replaces defective parts on equipment, adjusts clearances and alignment of moving parts
  • Aligns machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs
  • Assemble and install equipment, using hand tools and power tools
  • Positions steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures
  • Moves machinery and equipment, using chain hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks
  • Assembles machines and mounts them to a foundation or other structures, using hand tools and power tools
  • Lays out mounting holes accurately and drills holes to the proper size
  • Shrink-fits bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items using thermal expansion or liquid nitrogen technique
  • Knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations
  • Demonstrates proficiency on a milling machine, drill press, engine lathe, and vertical/horizontal boring mills
  • Operates a lathe to grind, file, or turn parts down to dimensional specifications
  • Aligns pump and motors efficiently using the dial indicator method
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
  • Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group
  • Ability to do basic math and read, write, speak, and comprehend English
  • Ability to perform percentages, metric and decimal conversions, and multiply fractions and decimals for measurements
  • Reads and understands blueprints and assembly drawings
Shop Tools & Measurements
  • Knowledge of standard shop measuring tools: micrometers (inside, outside, depth), vernier scales and/or dial calipers, rulers and tape measures, indicators, protractors, vernier, linear, firm and spring joint calipers, height gauges, pi tapes
  • Use hand tools such as files, hacksaws, wrenches, porta-powers, taps, and dies
Proficiency Areas
  • Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (valves, actuators, pumps, gears, gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) related to machine shop repairs
  • Propulsion basics including variable pitch props
  • Pumps types and mechanical seals
  • Steam systems
  • Underwater hull machinery and bearings
  • Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel, lube oil, and cooling
  • Knowledge of overboard and suction ship valves (disassembly, clean, lap and blue)
Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma, GED, or greater
  • 5 years of relevant work experience preferred
  • Proven skills: work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience
