Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Layout Specialist Machine Shop to join our Fabrication team in Portland, Oregon.

As a Layout Specialist in the Machine Shop, you will be essential in ensuring that every component is accurately laid out and prepared for machining operations. Your expertise will be pivotal in evaluating job assignments, acquiring necessary specifications, and utilizing advanced computing systems to facilitate precise layouts. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to analyze engineering data, troubleshoot processes, and develop innovative solutions for complex machining challenges.

Position Responsibilities
  • Evaluate job assignments based on size and complexity, utilizing written and verbal tie‑ins to establish job priorities.

  • Acquire necessary drawings, Boeing (BAC) specifications, and documents using computing systems such as Bold/Web and CATIA.

  • Determine the appropriate media for the layout process, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), CNC, and digital data.

  • Perform precise layouts of parts using measuring tools (e.g., height gauges, sine bars, micrometers) on surface tables to ensure accuracy.

  • Analyze CATIA information, including digital data and overlays, to support various customer needs (e.g., quality assurance, engineering, production).

  • Verify drawing standards by digitalizing photo contact masters (PCM) to ensure compliance with NC or CNC machine specifications.

  • Troubleshoot and edit media Tryout (MTO) as necessary to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Design and set up shop aids for complex machine operations to facilitate production.

  • Develop experimental processes (e.g., shot peening, heat treating, plating) to achieve dimensionally accurate parts.

  • Operate overhead cranes to position parts and tools accurately during machining operations.

  • Plan and sequence work assignments, applying shop math, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate necessary dimensions.

  • Investigate and resolve engineering rejections by recommending effective methods and processes for machining.

  • Utilize geometric dimensioning and tolerance interpretation to ensure the best fit of materials during problem‑solving.

  • Lay out guidelines and reference points on tooling and parts for subsequent machining operations, ensuring accuracy in production.

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications, and handle and dispose of hazardous materials in an approved manner.

  • Collaborate with machine operators to accomplish difficult setups and machining operations, ensuring quality and efficiency.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards
  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10‑15 lbs to 15‑35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
