Overview

The Senior Supply Technician shall ensure supplies and materials are distributed to all areas and provide wards, clinics, operating rooms, secondary storage locations, and other hospital facilities with supplies and materials, including sterile and non-sterile medical supplies, instrument sets, and equipment. Tasks include scanning, barcoding, receiving, storing, and distributing medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and other materials, cleaning, and first-in, first-out rotation of expendable medical supplies and implants.

The work requires knowledge of applicable policies and procedures as well as inventory systems such as the generic inventory package (GIP), barcoding, aseptic procedures, and logistics processes.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Supply Distribution:
    Maintains stock at primary and secondary inventory locations for all clinical and administrative services. Pulls stock from main inventory for delivery; replenishes stock inventory; communicates with clinical and administrative customers to identify issues and needs and escalate as needed; maintains records on stock levels; recommends revisions in stock levels to Inventory Management Specialists; communicates concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures to lead or supervisor;

    provides information to customers and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Communications and issue resolution:
    Interacts with customers and vendors to obtain information regarding medical supplies; informs staff of changes to items and supplies and current medical supply resources.
  • Inventory control and recalls:
    Monitors expiration dates, rotates stock to limit outdates, and removes items from use as required by outdates; assists in identifying recalled items and hazard alerts; escalates significant deviations to Inventory Management Specialists.
  • Aseptic cleaning:
    Cleans assigned secondary areas (Omnicell units, bins and shelves) in accordance with aseptic principles as published in infection control guidelines, local SOPs, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Inventory Receiving and storage:
    Receives supplies and materials into the VA Health Care System and supported catchment area; unpacks, uncrates, and stores items in main/primary inventory areas using computerized inventory systems to ensure sterility and data integrity; maintains stock levels and communicates updates to clinic and ward personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

The work requires standing and walking throughout the workday with frequent reaching, bending, and lifting of supply packages (up to 50 pounds). It also requires pushing loaded carts weighing more than 100 pounds. Heavier items may require assistance to move (over 40 pounds).

Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the medical center and supported catchment areas, including wards, storage buildings, and warehouses with environments ranging from clean to hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lit. Outdoor deliveries in all weather conditions are required. Workers may encounter hazardous materials in daily activities.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum of 8 years relevant experience, including 2 years of recent specialized supply technician experience, preferably in the VA or DOD. Requires practical knowledge of standard supply management procedures, ability to interpret policies and regulations related to supply/inventory management and federal acquisition systems. Knowledge of stock rotation, hazard alerts and recalls; understanding of aseptic procedures integration into health care programs; familiarity with automated inventory systems.

Requires analytical ability to define and recognize problems, collect data, and make recommendations. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) to manage inventory.
