Department OverviewThe Diagnostic Imaging Supervisor for MRI reports directly to the MRI Manager and is responsible for daily coordination of the MRI department functions to assure services to be delivered expediently and efficiently through effective organization of staff and workflow. He/she works effectively with The Center For Health and Healing Imaging Manager and the PET/MR Manager to assure appropriate staff coverage in addition to coordination and coverage of MRI scanners in the main HRC department, DCH, DCHOR and Beaverton locations.
Maintains knowledge of department procedures to provide assistance throughout the patient care continuum, performs MRI exams as required, and communicates effectively with staff and collaborates with Radiologists, Physicists, clinicians and ancillary services to assure the highest quality patient care. The supervisor provides technical expertise and recommendations to the manager(s) and/or the DI Senior Director, ensures continuous communication with problem‑solving of MRI scanner service issues with clinical engineering, vendor service engineers, managers and supervisors, and serves as a technical resource to the staff, management, imaging physicists and Radiologists.
Department Operations Management
- Staff scheduling, workflow oversight and enhancement, rounding, equipment issues/co‑ordination, and meeting participation.
- Conducting or co‑facilitating staff meetings.
- Participating in department planning and operation meetings.
- Coordinating coverage for vacations, appointments, and other outages during on‑duty and off‑duty hours.
- Coordinating training of new staff technologists, maintaining staff competency and training staff on new technologies.
- Ensuring compliance with hospital and university regulatory and safety requirements.
- Identifying training and educational needs of staff and determining appropriate resources.
- Practicing cost‑effective use of supplies and materials.
- Preparing formal performance evaluations and GROW conversations, discussing results with employees.
- Supervisor of all MRI imaging areas, functions and workflow; providing workflow analysis and changes to meet service and budget expectations and improve safety.
- Analyzing budget and productivity metrics and detailing department performance.
- Fostering OHSU Lean principles of OPEX in daily huddles for continuous improvement.
- Providing partnership support with all department faculty, residents, RN technologists and support staff.
- Involved in recruitment and retention, optimizing onboarding and employee engagement plans.
- Maintaining overall departmental cleanliness, organization and DNV compliance.
- Assisting the MRI Manager and Assistant Department Director with other supervisory duties as instructed.
- Ensuring quality images are provided with accuracy, efficiency and timely follow‑through of exams.
- Maintaining technical knowledge and ability to provide scanning assistance in MRI department when necessary.
- Understanding complex magnetic resonance physics and managing complex imaging protocols.
- Keeping imaging equipment and work areas neat and clean to meet compliance standards.
- Demonstrating technical expertise in creating and managing protocols, reconstructions and 3D reformations; deciding on study completeness and quality independently of a Radiologist.
- Applying patient‑positioning knowledge with a high regard for safety, care and comfort; ensuring technologists work collaboratively with RN staff to prescreen patients.
- Ensuring all scanning duties, including data entry to the radiology information system and the hospital billing system, are completed appropriately.
- Demonstrating competent use of all MRI scanners and ancillary equipment; staying current with new technology, hardware and software upgrades.
- Coordinating all aspects of research studies from initial request to scan and ensuring accurate parameter performance.
