Opportunity

Are you a motivated community corrections professional or social counselor who is a force for positive change in a fast‑paced environment? Do you share our vision of community safety through positive change? We can train you. As a Sworn Parole and Probation Officer (PPO) with Multnomah County’s DCJ, you will play a key role in creating a stronger, safer community. You will help clients develop pro‑social behaviors using core correctional practices, apply cognitive interventions and behavioral practices, and promote accountability and lasting behavior change.

Responsibilities
  • Use evidence‑based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, EPICS, and Effective Communication to assess risk and deliver individualized interventions.
  • Conduct field investigations, crisis prevention, intervention, and de‑escalation to keep the community, clients and yourself safe.
  • Make decisions to arrest and coordinate arrests, transport, and other public safety work in accordance with departmental rules.
  • Organize and prioritize workload, meet strict deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team to manage caseload efficiently.
  • Communicate respectfully with clients, community partners, and co‑workers; prepare accurate reports and documents for courts, treatment agencies, and other stakeholders within tight timelines.
  • Apply inclusive workplace practices, lead cross‑culturally, build relationships, and foster an environment where diversity is valued and leveraged.
Qualifications
  • Sworn Peace Officer:
    Must pass DPSST certification within 18 months of hire; state statutes exclude persons convicted of mandatory disqualifying events.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, administration of justice, psychology, sociology, social work, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Six months experience in responsible social counseling, case management, community corrections, law enforcement, or corrections—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • United States citizen or in process of finalizing U.S. citizenship; completed within 18 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license, successful physical and psychological examinations, thorough background investigation, and fingerprinting before first day of employment.
  • Bilingual applicants encouraged; oral and written fluency in English and a second language may be required for some positions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Social counseling experience that includes case management, community supervision, or community corrections; directing, motivating and assessing clients.
  • Law Enforcement experience, including corrections.
  • Current or recent Parole/Probation officer certification by the Oregon DPSST.
