About Role

As a member of the Underwriting team, you evaluate each assigned group’s risk and attach the appropriate rate—all in service of creating an economically sustainable health care system.

Qualifications
  • Underwriter I: Bachelor’s degree in business, math, statistics or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Underwriter II: Bachelor’s degree in business, math, statistics or related discipline and a minimum of 2 years related experience, or equivalent.
  • Underwriter III: Bachelor’s degree in business, math, statistics or related discipline and a minimum of 4 years related experience, or equivalent.
  • Underwriter Senior: Bachelor’s degree in business, math, statistics or related discipline and a minimum of 6 years related experience, or equivalent.
Skills and Attributes
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Business sense including finance, accounting, economics, and risk management principles.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive internal and external customer interactions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated technology proficiency, including Excel, Word, and applicable software applications.

What You Will Do
  • Approve renewal changes after verifying rates and product selection.
  • Audit both new and renewing groups as necessary.
  • Determine rates for alternative benefit variations.
  • Ensure group participation requirements are met.
  • Prepare rate filings and maintain spreadsheet on group renewal history.
  • Develop rate theses and memoranda for approved changes.
  • Process renewal rate action and proposal closing paperwork.
  • Support internal sales staff with underwriting questions and issue resolution.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions to other departments when needed.
Additional Responsibilities – Underwriter II
  • Determine rates for alternative benefit variations and funding arrangements.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior underwriters.
  • Prepare contingent premium settlements, rate quotations, and bid specifications.
  • Process group financial settlement calculations and review exception requests.
  • Support management reporting and automated rating tools development.
Additional Responsibilities – Underwriter III
  • Determine rates for complex funding arrangements and provide strategy on pricing.
  • Maintain and update underwriting guidelines and rating policy.
  • Test new rating, underwriting, and front‑end systems.
  • Explain basic factors influencing rates (group size, benefit type, age/gender mix, large claims, prior carrier, current rates).
  • Analyze group risk and large claim trend for renewals.
  • Develop prospective and renewal rates in line with corporate and underwriting guidelines.
  • Grant or deny exceptions to underwriting policy.
  • Administer underwriting and legislative guidelines for new and renewing groups.
  • Handle large volume production issues (e.g., reinstatements, eligibility standards, group ).
  • Maintain knowledge of state and federal regulations affecting group rating.
  • Prepare rate breakouts, hierarchy definitions, and experience reports for fiscal, ERISA, and contingent premium settlements.
