JOB SUMMARY

The Mortgage Underwriter III plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and integrity of our loan portfolio through the thorough analysis and underwriting of residential mortgage loans. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of direct mortgage underwriting experience, with a strong background in Jumbo non‑conforming loans and/or FHA/VA government underwriting. This role also requires an advanced understanding of business cash flow analysis, particularly for self‑employed borrowers, and a demonstrated ability to mentor less experienced underwriters.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS
  • Analyze and underwrite a broad range of loan applications including Conforming, Jumbo, FHA, and VA products in compliance with investor and agency guidelines.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of complex income scenarios, including Business tax returns and cash flow analysis for self‑employed borrowers.
  • Ensure loan files meet all regulatory and company requirements for credit, income, assets, and collateral.
  • Serve as a technical expert and resource for fellow OnPoint staff requiring senior‑level judgment.
  • Collaborate closely with Loan Officers, Processors, and other internal departments to facilitate timely and accurate loan decisions.
  • Serve as a mentor to Junior and Mid‑Level Underwriters, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to enhance team knowledge and consistency.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with industry changes, investor guidelines, and underwriting best practices.
  • Maintain a pipeline of loans in an efficient and timely manner while meeting service level agreements.
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies and compliance regulations including TRID, RESPA, and other federal guidelines.
  • Additional projects, responsibilities, or other duties assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
  • Strong ability to analyze business tax returns, and complete complex cash flow analysis.
  • Exceptional knowledge of agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac), AUS systems (DU/LP), and compliance requirements.
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading junior underwriting staff.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and decision‑making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage high volumes in a fast‑paced environment without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Maintain a strong willingness to partner with our Sales and Processing teams in building a strong member‑first culture.
  • Must be willing to work in office 40% of the working days
MIN QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years of recent mortgage underwriting experience.
  • Proficiency in underwriting Jumbo Non‑conforming loans and/or FHA/VA Government loans (DE and/or SAR/LAPP certifications preferred).
    • A minimum of 6 months’ experience in either category
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • VA LAPP/SAR Designation
  • Experience with Encompass or similar LOS
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, or a related field (preferred but not required)
