Job Description & How to Apply Below
We seek a full-time postdoctoral scholar to join a research group studying the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) and multiphysics behavior of frozen and cryogenic soils, with applications in permafrost engineering, cold-regions geotechnics, and climate-driven ground processes. The postdoctoral scholar will lead applied modeling and data-constrained analyses using established numerical frameworks and commercial simulation platforms, including integration with laboratory and imaging datasets.
The appointment is initially for six months, with expectation of renewal contingent on performance, funding, and mutual interest. The position is available immediately, with flexibility in start date.
Resume Required
Hiring Range: $61,008 - $65,000
Minimum Education Required- Doctorate (Academic)
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geophysics, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related field at the time of appointment, with a strong background in frozen soil mechanics, permafrost, or cold-regions engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in multiphysics (THM) modeling of geomaterials, including constitutive modeling of frozen or partially frozen soils and interpretation of coupled thermal hydraulic mechanical processes.
- Practical proficiency with commercial or established simulation platforms, such as COMSOL Multiphysics, FLAC / FLAC3D, Abaqus, ANSYS, MATLAB, or comparable tools, including experience implementing user subroutines or custom extensions for advanced material modeling or customized workflows.
- Ability to independently design, execute, and interpret numerical simulations, and to integrate modeling results with laboratory, imaging, or field data related to frozen soils or permafrost.
- Strong scientific writing skills and demonstrated record of peer-reviewed journal publications.
- Experience managing or coordinating research workflows involving multiple software tools, datasets, or modeling and experimental components.
- Experience with scientific programming or scripting languages such as Python, Fortran, C/C++, or similar, for simulation automation, data processing, or workflow integration.
- Research proposal writing experience.
- Prior mentoring or supervision of graduate or undergraduate researchers.
