The Smart Mobility Practice is seeking a Traffic Designer / Traffic Engineer in Portland, OR.
This role supports a wide range of traffic engineering design and planning projects and is ideal for a technically strong professional who enjoys solving complex transportation challenges, exercising sound engineering judgment, and contributing to high-quality project delivery. This position is anticipated to be part-time, supporting 20 to 29 hours per week.
What You’ll DoKey Responsibilities:
- Developing detailed design elements, calculations, and technical documentation required for project delivery.
- Independently performing and coordinating advanced traffic engineering analyses, including multimodal operations analysis, traffic safety analysis, travel demand modeling, signing, striping, and pavement marking design, traffic signal design, temporary traffic control design, and illumination and ITS design.
- Making informed technical decisions related to project design details in accordance with project goals, applicable standards, and client requirements.
- Applying a strong working knowledge of traffic engineering software and design tools to complete complex assignments efficiently and accurately.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams on project setup, data collection, analysis, documentation, quality control, and quality assurance.
- Supporting project managers and task leads by providing technical input, coordinating design tasks, and helping maintain project schedules and deliverables.
- Applying company standards, procedures, and workflows consistently across project work.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent technical training.
- Professional registrations or certifications relevant to the field (e.g., EIT, PE, PTOE, or similar) preferred.
- 7+ years of relevant traffic engineering or transportation design experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with traffic engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Micro Station, Synchro, VISSIM, VISUM, HCS, HSM, FREEVAL, and related tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

- $60.00/hr. - The posted salary range represents the typical range for this position and is provided in accordance with applicable state and local pay transparency laws. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
