Program Focus

Portland Community College is accepting applications to be considered for Part-Time Faculty assignments in Native American Studies. The Department will review applications in this pool as the need arises for new part-time faculty in this area. This is NOT an announcement of a specific open position, but a Part-time Faculty Interest Pool, from which the department will identify applicants based on course assignment needs during the Academic Year.

Your application may be considered for substitute assignments as well as full term class assignments.

Qualifications

First – Academic Credential

NAS Instructors must possess appropriate academic credentials by holding one of the following degrees:

  • A masters or doctorate degree in interdisciplinary Native American Studies
  • A masters or doctorate degree in interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies with an emphasis on Native American Studies
  • A JD with an emphasis in American Indian Law
  • A masters or doctorate degree in a traditional academic discipline (Art, Music, Literature, Linguistics, Social Work, Public Health, Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology, Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, etc.) plus a clear record of academic coursework, teaching, and/or publication in Native American Studies such as:
  • instructor of record for two or more college-level NAS courses or equivalent; or
  • primary author of two or more publications focusing on Native/Indigenous studies; or
  • creator of published works of Indigenous arts; or
  • at least two years formal study of an Indigenous language with a representative of a Native nation; or
  • at least 16 quarter credits or the equivalent of upper division or graduate NAS coursework

Second – Cultural Relations and Engagement

NAS Instructors must have a demonstrated and documentable connection to Native American / Indigenous Communities and an ongoing commitment to working with Native communities. Evidence may include a letter from a Native community representative (e.g., Native nation/government, urban Native community organization, or academic Native community leaders). Academic credentials can be subject to the Demonstrated Competency process. Cultural Relations and Engagement cannot be subject to the Demonstrated Competency process.
