About the Program

Multnomah County Library's mission is to empower diverse communities to learn and create. Volunteers support this mission by helping GED test takers with their educational goals.

About the Project

Are you good at math, social studies, science or language arts? Do you want to support adult learners in reaching their goals? Partner with adults studying for the GED tests during the tutoring sessions! During the weekly shift, volunteers will meet with learners individually or in small groups at Midland Library. Study materials will be provided.

Locations & Dates
  • Midland Library, 805 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233:
    Tuesdays 6:00 to 7:30 pm
  • North Portland Library, 512 N Killingsworth St, Portland OR 97217:
    Mondays 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Time Commitment

2 shifts per month for a minimum of 6 months. Please note that this is a drop-in tutoring program, so attendance may vary. Your flexibility is appreciated, as your presence is valuable for learners who do attend.

Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Meet with learners individually or in small groups during the weekly GED drop-in sessions. Group size depends on who comes in that day.
  • Engage learners using open-ended questions to determine their specific needs and goals.
  • Review study materials that are brought in by learners in all GED subject areas:
    Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.
  • Answer questions and provide guidance on passing the section of the GED test.
  • Connect with students one-on-one on an ongoing basis when they are able to come weekly.
  • Emphasize positive reinforcement and repetition to build learners' confidence and skill, understanding that progress may be slow but steady.
  • Be well prepared and offer learning activities that are based on the interests of the learners; offer to review work that learners have completed independently.
  • Foster a supportive, nonjudgmental learning environment where adults feel empowered to improve their literacy skills.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years or older
  • Proficiency in basic math, including geometry, algebra, graphs, and functions
  • Teaching or tutoring experience preferred but not required
  • Empathy and a friendly demeanor
  • Patience, flexibility, and creativity
  • Commitment to help individuals reach personal educational goals
  • Willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students
  • Respects diversity and appreciates diverse learning abilities
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other volunteers and staff
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering.
