Job Purpose Statement: The High School Athletic Director provides visionary leadership and operational oversight for the school’s interscholastic athletic and OSAA-sponsored activities programs. This role ensures that athletic programs are inclusive, equitable, well-managed, and aligned with the district’s mission of supporting student achievement, wellness, character development, and community engagement. The Athletic Director fosters positive student-athlete experiences that emphasize academic success, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
Essential Job Functions
- Athletic Leadership, Equity, Compliance, and Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), Hood Conference, and community partners.
- Ensure full compliance with OSAA, league, district, and school policies, with a commitment to fairness, transparency, and equity in eligibility and participation decisions.
- Prepare
, submit
, and maintain accurate eligibility and participation records for all OSAA-sponsored athletics and activities. - Advise school administration on athletic policies and practices that remove barriers to participation and promote inclusive access for all students.
- Coordinate and publish athletic schedules to families, staff, opponents, media, and community stakeholders using inclusive and accessible communication practices.
- Celebrate
, promote and share information about athletic programs, student achievements, and key milestones in clear and inclusive ways. - Participate in league, state, and professional development meetings to remain current on best practices in athletic administration, student safety, and equity.
- Facilities and Event Operations
- Collaborate with district and school leadership to advocate for equitable access to safe, well-maintained athletic facilities and resources.
- Coordinate shared use of facilities among athletics, activities, physical education, and community groups with an emphasis on fairness and transparency.
- Oversee stadium operations, rentals, staffing, and supervision, ensuring events are welcoming and safe for all participants and spectators.
- Support facility maintenance, safety inspections, and compliance with accessibility standards.
- Ensure all athletic spaces meet safety, supervision, and risk-management expectations.
- Staff Supervision and Student-Athlete Support
- Foster strong, respectful communication among students, families, coaches, teachers, and administrators.
- Lead recruitment, screening, and recommendation of coaching candidates using equitable hiring practices that value diversity, experience, and cultural competence.
- Conduct thorough end-of-season evaluations with each head coach, providing constructive feedback focused on growth, accountability, and core values of the athletic program.
- Provide active mentorship for first-year head coaches that includes routine check-ins, program organization, review of practice plans, collaborative and organized meeting agendas, uniform inventory, and communication to families.
- Support the hiring, training, and mentoring of coaches, with a focus on student safety, inclusive practices, and positive youth development.
- Establish and enforce athletic participation expectations, codes of conduct, and training rules that are consistent, restorative, and developmentally appropriate.
- Oversee systems that monitor student-athlete academic progress and collaborate with teachers and counselors to support student success.
