Class Lead / Facilitator on Saturdays (Hillsboro) (age 21+) Referral
Guide students and their mentors through engaging activities and meaningful discussions focused on college access and preparation.
About the ProgramMinds Matter’s mission is to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by preparing them for long-term college success. Through a comprehensive tutoring and mentoring program that begins in students’ sophomore year of high school and continues through graduation and beyond, Minds Matter supports students academically, emotionally, and strategically as they navigate the college admissions process. The ultimate goal is to help students gain admission to four-year colleges with minimal debt so they can pursue their academic and professional aspirations.
Volunteers play a critical role in advancing this mission. By serving as mentors, tutors, and class facilitators, volunteers provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and access to knowledge that students may not otherwise have. Their engagement helps students build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and make informed decisions about college and financial aid. Through meaningful relationships and hands-on support, volunteers directly contribute to expanding college access, equity, and long-term success for Minds Matter students.
Volunteer Benefits:
- Leadership and facilitation skills through leading group discussions and activities
- Mentorship experience supporting high school students through the college preparation process
- Deeper understanding of college access, educational equity, and systemic barriers faced by low-income students
- Knowledge of the college admissions and financial aid process
- Stronger communication and public-speaking skills
- Collaboration and teamwork experience through weekly planning with peers and program leadership
- Problem-solving and adaptability in a dynamic, student-centered environment
- Increased confidence, responsibility, and sense of civic engagement
