The Opportunity:
Portland Public Schools is seeking a talented school leader with experience in leading an increasingly diverse school. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership practices that support collaboration, data-driven decision making, family and community engagement, innovation, and teamwork-oriented approaches, with a racial equity and equality-focused lens. The candidate will also demonstrate an awareness of the intersectional identities multilingual learners possess and the historical inequities they have experienced.
The principal at Cesar Chavez K-8 School will continue to establish a learning environment that promotes academic excellence and the personal growth of every student and staff member. This school principal position is under the supervision of the Office of School Performance and is supervised by the assigned Senior Director of Schools.
Cesar Chavez is a K-8 Spanish Dual Language Immersion school located in the Portsmouth neighborhood of North Portland. The school serves a diverse community of almost 500 students and is brimming with strengths and a rich cultural history. Cesar Chavez puts students at the center of all decision-making and strives to create an inclusive learning environment that is joyful, safe, and supportive of students as they work to achieve their goals.
Cesar Chavez hosts an active Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) which works with staff, parents, and members of the community. The school is also a SUN Community School and offers a wide variety of before and after-school classes and programs for students and parents. The school community is looking for a leader that is committed to collaboration, rigorous instruction, and the implementation of culturally sustaining practices that allow the community to flourish.
Function
Under administrative direction, provide instructional leadership for an Elementary, Middle, PK-8 or High school campus under administrative direction. Establish an instructional vision and focused plan for improving student achievement while narrowing the disparities between the highest and lowest performing students; supervise and support professional educators in strengthening their instructional practices; create a community of continuous learning for all staff and students;
foster a culture of high expectation, providing every student with equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction; support and implement the District’s Racial Equity Policy; build strong partnerships with families and community; create a safe, welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served; manage operational, technical, and school activities and staff to promote student growth.
Duties
- Promote a positive, safe and caring climate for learning; create a welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served; communicate effectively with students, staff and parents.
- Lead development, evaluation and improvement of instructional programs which provide access and support to rigorous and culturally relevant instruction for all students.
- Lead development of school improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members; develop, maintain, and use information systems to track progress on school performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
- Regularly observe classroom instruction and work to improve employee performance as principal evaluator for employee evaluation systems. Ensure equitable access to curriculum standards, programs, and materials regardless of race or achievement levels.
- Build a shared leadership team which reflects diverse perspectives. Develop and mentor others with an emphasis on administrative team members.
- Ensure a fair and equitable interview and selection process for open positions. Create a welcoming and supportive environment for new employees.
