Position Summary

Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept:
The PSU School of Social Work (SSW) envisions a world where all people lead fulfilling lives in affirming, just and equitable communities. Rooted in justice, relationship, and community collaboration, PSU SSW advances knowledge and creates social change through teaching, research, practice, and advocacy. Our core values and beliefs include collective care, responsive learning, knowledge that serves, community partnership, and social change.

The SSW provides accessible interdisciplinary educational opportunities and actively works to bring about structural change through its teaching, training, workforce development, research, and advocacy. The SSW includes three undergraduate majors:
Human Services, Child, Youth, and Family Studies, and BSW and two graduate programs: MSW and PhD.

Program Overview:
This position is open to instructors interested in teaching in Portland, OR and/or online. The Child, Youth, and Family Studies program (CYFS) uses a justice‑minded orientation to understand both the history and contemporary social positions of children, youth, and families. The curriculum centers on dynamic analysis of race, class, gender, ability, sexualities, and development as factors shaping the experiences of children, youth and families.

The Human Services Program emphasizes cultural humility and responsiveness to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. The curriculum focuses on building the technical skills needed in the field, theoretical insights, as well as collaborative, respectful, and person‑centered ways to deliver effective care across a range of settings. CYFS and HS are undergraduate programs located in the PSU School of Social Work (SSW).

We are committed to hiring a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce. Persons with lived experience from communities of color, women, persons with disabilities, low‑income communities, veterans, LGBTQ community members and members of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Indian tribes are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

M.S. or M.A. in a field of study closely related to human services, children, youth, and families (e.g., education, sociology, human development, psychology, youth studies, family studies, social work, early childhood); OR a B.A. or B.S. and demonstrated teaching or practice experience. All adjunct candidates are required to be living in either Oregon or Washington for the academic year 2026‑2027.

Preferred Qualifications

We primarily seek applicants for CYFS and HS who have expertise in critical theory or epistemologies, experiential or emancipatory pedagogies, writing instruction, aging in families, social policy, child life, and related aspects of the Child, Youth, and Family Studies curriculum (including courses in family of origin and bias recognition, social justice and anti‑oppression work, family theory, stress and coping, child life, family law and policy, and related courses).

CFLE credentialing is desired. Ideal candidates will also provide evidence of their experience working effectively around issues of social justice, diversity, and inclusion, with demonstrated capacity to meet the needs of underrepresented students and other marginalized groups.

Key Cultural Competencies
  • Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages and celebrates differences.
  • Functions and communicates effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
