Job SummaryThe Community Work-Study Assistant for Accessibility Support will play a key role in helping Accessible Education Services (AES) connect students with disabilities to the resources they need for equal access. This position involves hands‑on interaction with students, including checking in to ensure they understand their accommodations, verifying that course materials are accessible, and assisting them in connecting with other campus supports, including peer tutoring.
The role will also include supporting the use of assistive technologies, converting documents to accessible formats, and providing reading services as needed.
- Student Communication and Support: Assist AES staff in checking in with students to ensure they understand their accommodations, are connected to needed resources, and have access to accessible course materials.
- Resource Connection: Help students access tutoring, writing assistance and other academic supports as directed by AES staff.
- Accessibility Verification and Assistive Technology: Review and convert course materials for accessibility, add required modifications (e.g., alt text, reading order), and assist students in learning and using assistive technologies.
- Training, Outreach, and Exam Support: Assist in developing resources and training materials on accessibility standards and assistive technology, participate in outreach activities to raise awareness of accessibility, and occasionally serve as a live reader during exams in accordance with AES protocols.
- Other relevant details as assigned.
- Must be enrolled in a degree program and eligible for Federal Work‑Study funding.
- Ability to follow structured guidelines, work independently and communicate clearly.
- Consistent availability during regular hours to meet student needs.
- Experience or interest in working with assistive technology such as screen readers or text‑to‑speech tools, or familiarity with digital content creation and formatting for accessibility.
- Commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, with a desire to support students with disabilities in achieving equal access to educational resources.
- Ability to remain focused and articulate clearly for extended periods, particularly during exam reading sessions.
- Ability to use digital tools for document formatting and assistive technology setup.
